disadvantages of RGB

What are the Disadvantages of RGB Lighting?

RGB lighting has become very popular in recent days in computer gaming. Even a lot of computer users are building PC with RGB lighting though they do not like gaming, some of them are also not aware of the disadvantages of RGB lighting. Whether for gaming or only for decoration, RGB lighting is now unbelievably popular nowadays.

RGB lighting has many advantages. It gives mental peace to those who like cool decorations in their room. But this also has some disadvantages. In this article, we will discuss only the disadvantages of RGB lighting in some detail.

The points we considered to find the disadvantages are comfort, cost, electric bill, reliability, and heat generation. So, let’s get started.

Disadvantages of RGB lighting

1. Discomfort

Is RGB good for gaming? While answering this question, we tried to show that this RGB lighting gives comfort to many gamers. They are used to this. They will not feel comfortable without this type of lighting. But what if someone just buys some RGB lighting to follow the trend though he does not enjoy it? This can lead him to discomfort and distraction.

Also, it can lead to eye strain. Eye strain is characterized by symptoms like dry and irritated eyes, blurry vision, and headaches. The bright and flashing lights of RGB lighting can cause eye strain as well as fatigue, particularly if someone spends long hours in RGB lighting although he is not comfortable with this.

Another disadvantage is if the user lives with other people in the same room, other people will be disturbed by the lights.

2. Overheating the PC

Does RGB make the PC hotter? Yes, obviously. Though that is not a problem in most cases. RGB lighting itself doesnโ€™t generate too much heat. But it is true that some RGB lighting components can contribute to overall heat production in a gaming PC because of consuming some extra power and this generates heat as a byproduct.

Our research team found that the increase in the temperature made by the RGB components in an average PC case that has been made for RGB is not enough to be panicked.

But if the PC case is not compatible with RGB or if any user uses a low to moderate-level PC case to use high power consuming RGB component, then certainly the PC will be overheated.

In addition, if proper ventilation and airflow cannot be maintained inside the PC case that has some RGB components, it will produce an extra amount of heat.

3. Cost

RGB fans, RGB strips, RGB keyboards, RGB mice, and RGB PC cases; all tend to be more expensive than non-RGB components. For example, one of the best RGB keyboards is the Corsair K100 RGB Optical-Mechanical Gaming keyboard. This keyboardโ€™s price is 199 USD as of the start of May 2023.

Usually, no non-RGB keyboard will be found at this type of price in the market. Yes, the quality is not the same. But if you want to compare normal keyboards for office use, an RGB keyboardโ€™s price will obviously be higher than non-RGB for some same quality.

If any user wants to add RGB lighting to multiple components, the cost will surely add up quickly. This would be a significant expense for the gamer who is on a tight budget.

4. Energy Consumption (Electricity Bill)

RGB elements in a PC can potentially contribute to higher electricity bills, especially if you use it more a long period of time or use too many RGB elements. If you use low-quality RGB elements, they will consume higher electricity and thus it will make a higher electricity bill.

The exact amount of electricity consumed by RGB lighting will depend on these factors. However, itโ€™s worth noting that the energy consumption of RGB is typically relatively low compared to the energy consumption of other PC components like CPU and GPU.

In conclusion, it can be said that if any user chooses energy-efficient RGB components, then the electricity bill will not be a problem. But if not, then it will definitely become a huge disadvantage.

5. Reliability

RGB components of a PC may be more prone to failure or malfunction compared to non-RGB components. It is because of the additional components that can potentially break or wear out over time.

But reliability will not be an issue if a user chooses high-quality components from world-famous manufacturers and installs and maintains them carefully.

Conclusion

RGB or Red, Green, and Blue lights have a bunch of advantages. Usually, the advantages of RGB lighting in PC are discussed. The disadvantages of RGB are not discussed enough nowadays. Besides there are some people who always try to demotivate others from using RGB lighting in PC. We can call them the RGB haters.

Balanced and neutral discussion is important in this topic. RGB has a good number of benefits, we are not going to mention them here. But RGB has some drawbacks as well.

The most common disadvantages of RGB are eye strain which is not usual for this type of lighting. Other discomforts are also possible. But the users who are used to RGB, do not face any challenges in usual.

Other disadvantages of RGB are reliability, high-energy consumption, and heat generation can be minimized to almost zero level by using high-quality products from world-famous brands.

Therefore, in conclusion, it can be said that the disadvantages of RGB are no major disadvantages. They can be minimized and ignored. But still, everything has some drawbacks. RGB is not an exception in this case obviously.
